Frequently Asked Questions

Before you book

Do I need experience?

For our beginners courses and one-off workshops, none at all. We start from scratch and teach you everything you need. For intermediate courses, some prior wheel or hand build experience is required. Each course description notes what’s needed, but if you’re not sure which level is right for you, just get in touch.

What age are your classes suitable for?

Our term courses and workshops are for adults (18+). Mud Club school holiday sessions are designed for kids and teens aged 7 to 17. Parent or guardian attendance is required for children under 12.

Can I buy a gift card and let someone else choose their class?

Yes! Gift cards are redeemable on any class or workshop, so the recipient picks what suits them.

What to expect

What should I wear?

Something you don’t mind getting clay on - there will be clay on it. Please bring an apron or an old towel. Clay has its own ideas about where it ends up, and we’d rather it not end up on your good clothes.

What’s included in the price?

Clay, glazes, and use of equipment are all included in class and course prices. Firing fees apply.

How many people are in a class?

We keep class sizes small - generally 10 per session. Small enough that there’s always a teacher nearby when you need one.

Can I bring a friend?

Absolutely. Book separately and request the same session, or get in touch and we’ll do our best to place you together.

Your pieces

What happens to my work after class?

Everything stays at the studio to be completed as part of your course when you return each week (trimmed, dried, bisque fired, glazed, and glaze fired). For one-off workshops, pieces will be glazed and fired for you. We’ll let you know when your pieces are ready to collect.

When can I collect my finished pieces?

Usually within 4-6 weeks of your final session. We’ll send you a message when they’re ready.

What if a piece breaks in the kiln?

It happens, and it’s worth knowing upfront that cracking and breakage during the firing process is a normal part of working with clay - it’s part of the learning. That said, if something is damaged while being handled by us in the studio, we’ll do our best to make it right.

Bookings and payments

Can I join mid-term?

Generally not after week 2. Our courses build week on week, so starting from the beginning gives you the best experience.

Do you have a waitlist?

At this time we don't have waitlist functionality, but you can contact us to let us know you're keen, and we'll let you know if any spots become available.

What’s your cancellation policy for Classes, Workshops and Private bookings?

Term courses

A full credit note is available if you withdraw at least 7 days before the term begins. Once a term has started, no refund or credit will be issued. Missed sessions within a term cannot be rescheduled or refunded.

One-off workshops

Cancel 7 or more days before your session for a full refund. Cancel within 7 days and we'll issue a credit note valid for 12 months, redeemable on any class or workshop. No refund for no-shows.

Private bookings

A 50% deposit is required to secure your booking. This deposit is non-refundable. The remaining balance is due 7 days before your event. Cancellations made within 7 days of the event date will forfeit the full amount.

If Amfora cancels or reschedules

If we need to cancel or significantly change a class, you'll receive a full refund or the option to transfer to another session — your choice.

Credits

Credit notes are valid for 12 months from the date of issue and are redeemable against any Amfora class, workshop, or event.

What’s your cancellation policy for Membership

Monthly membership

To cancel your monthly membership, written notice must be received at least 30 days before your next billing date. Membership continues and studio access remains available throughout the notice period.

Quarterly and annual membership

Quarterly and annual memberships are paid upfront and are non-refundable. If you need to exit early due to exceptional circumstances, please get in touch — we'll consider requests for a credit note on unused months at our discretion.

Pausing your membership

Members who have held an active membership for 6 or more months and those who are on annual advance payment subscriptions may request a single pause of up to 8 weeks per calendar year. Pause requests are subject to availability and granted at Amfora's discretion. Membership billing resumes automatically at the end of the pause period.

Studio membership

What experience do I need to become a member?

At least two intermediate terms, or six to twelve months of experience working with clay, whether wheel or hand build. You should be comfortable working independently — centring, pulling, trimming, and hand building without needing step-by-step guidance.

What are the studio access hours?

The studio is accessible from 7am to midnight, with last entry at 10pm, seven days a week.

What’s included in membership?

Access to the studio, all wheels, hand building tools and equipment, studio glazes, and clay. Members are also welcome to bring their own clay if they prefer a specific type. Kiln firing is charged per kilogram. See the membership page for full details and pricing.
